Overview

Nampa Babe Ruth League Baseball program includes divisions for all children, ages 4-15. Baseball Divisions consist of the following programs:

  • Tee Ball (coed, ages 4-6)
  • Rookies (coed, ages 7-8)
  • Minors (ages 9-10)
  • Majors (ages 11-12)
  • Preps (ages 13-15)

Tee Ball Division
Often a family's first introduction to Nampa Babe Ruth is in the Tee Ball program. Tee Ball is the entry level division for players, ages 4-6. The experience is grounded in fun, fitness, and fundamentals while also being a key to growing a child's love for the game.

The NBR program provides volunteer coaches everything they need to create an environment where players will learn the skills of the game, while having fun and staying active. Parents and legal guardians of Tee Ball players are crucial to the extension of the program, and their satisfaction is equally important to its success. The outreach and inclusion of this division sets the foundation for the continued participation in the local NBR program.

The introduction to the Tee Ball program benefits the players and volunteer coaches, who typically are younger parents with little experience as coaches/managers.

Tee Ball players use bats and balls designated specifically for use in the division. Young athletes hit the ball from a batting tee which is height-adjusted for a level swing, batting in order through the line-up for the entire game. The roster size for a Tee Ball team averages 10-12 players, with a season featuring 1-2 practices per week with 1-2 games each week.

Parents are strongly encouraged to become involved in this entry level of NBR. After completing an NBR league volunteer application and passing a required national background check, parents may become involved in practices, and be eligible as coaches, managers, umpires, local league board members and other volunteer positions within the league.

Rookies Division
Designed primarily for ballplayers ages 7-8, this division makes use of a pitching machine to allow for more hittable balls at the plate and more action in the field. Fear of actually being hit by a pitched ball is diminished. It makes the game safer and improves the playing confidence and ability of all participants.

Rosters may be composed of between 11-15 players, but the league strives for roster sizes not exceeding 12 players. The diamond used is a 60-foot diamond and the pitching distance is 46 feet.

Minors Division (Cal Ripken)
Recommended  for ballplayers ages 9-10. Players build and refine their fundamental skills while beginning to understand game strategy and teamwork. In most regions, participants first experience post-season tournament competition in this level, leading to the 10 Year-Old World Series.

Features a 46' pitching distance and 60' base paths. Special base running rules are also in effect.

Majors Division (Cal Ripken)
The most experienced level of Cal Ripken Baseball, recommended for 11 and 12 year old players. Cal Ripken Baseball is played under the Official Baseball Rules, but implements some special rules as necessary for the development and welfare of this young age group.

The Majors division is the highest level of Cal Ripken Baseball and is considered a highly competitive division. Players in this division are league age 11 and 12 years old.  All players, will be required to perform an assessment to determine the players skills based on catching, fielding, throwing and hitting. Managers will then draft players based upon the player’s assessment and their individual team needs. All players are re-drafted each year. The emphasis of this division is to continue to focus on developing individual and overall team skills and managers will look to field the most competitive team. Game scores and standings are recorded and upon completion of the regular season, a post-season tournament is held. Players participating in this division can also be considered for our 11 and 12 year old Summer All Star teams. The season typically starts in mid March and goes until the end of May.

Games consist of six innings. In order to encourage the league to train more pitchers, there are rules that set the maximum number of innings a pitcher may pitch in a calendar week. Featuring a 50' pitching distance and 70' base paths, this division is offered as an option to the major division format, and includes a tournament trail from District competition through the World Series in Branson, MO at Ballparks of America featuring 8 International Champions.

Preps (Babe Ruth)
Players who compete in the Babe Ruth are league age 13 to 15 years old. All players will be required to perform an assessment to determine the players skills based on catching, fielding, throwing and hitting. All official Babe Ruth rules will be followed, and games will be played on a diamond with a 90-foot base path and a pitching distance of 60 feet 6 inches. Upon completion of the regular season, a post-season tournament will be held. Studies have shown that many young players lose interest in the game of baseball around 13 years of age due to decreased playing time and the fear of competing with players who have already experienced one to two years playing on the standard 90-foot diamond. This division will provide a competitive environment to allow kids to compete with other players at or above their own experience level. This will allow them to develop their skills and to prepare for high school baseball.
